Apple Watch Series 12 vs Ultra 4: Which one should you buy?

Apple Watch Series 12 vs Ultra 4: Which one should you buy?

Quick answer: Buy Series 12 unless you specifically need Ultra's battery life, case toughness, or outdoor connectivity — the health sensors, Readiness score, and Audio Intelligence are now identical across both watches, so you're no longer paying the Ultra premium for better tech. You're paying it for a tougher watch that lasts longer between charges.

The gap that used to justify Ultra's price just closed

For several generations, part of what you got for Ultra's premium was simply better hardware inside — sharper sensors, more capable tracking, the newest software features first. That's no longer true. Series 12 and Ultra 4 share the exact same Health Sensing System, the exact same S11 chip, the exact same Readiness score, and the exact same Audio Intelligence feature set. None of it is gated to Ultra. The question isn't "which Apple Watch has better tech" anymore — they're identical there. It's "do I need the case."

Who should buy Series 12

Most people. If your day-to-day is training, general fitness tracking, notifications, and you charge your watch overnight anyway, there is nothing Ultra 4 does for you that Series 12 doesn't — you'd be paying an extra $700 AUD for a case built for conditions you're not putting it in. The ceramic finish is also only available on Series 12, if that's part of the appeal.

Who should buy Ultra 4

People who actually run into battery limits, not people who like the idea of a watch that could theoretically survive an expedition. If you're doing multi-day hikes, ultra-distance events, dive logging, or genuinely spend time outside cell coverage where satellite connectivity isn't a novelty but a real safety consideration, the case and battery upgrade are doing real work for you. The Action button matters more than it sounds like once you're actually using it mid-activity.

The honest verdict

If you're comparing these two purely on what they can tell you about your body, buy Series 12 and save a few hundred dollars. That comparison used to favour Ultra; this year it doesn't. Ultra 4 earns its price on the case, the battery, and the outdoor connectivity — not on anything you'd call "smarter."

Whichever one you land on, the band question is the same either way: Series 12 keeps its 42mm/46mm sizing from Series 11, and Ultra 4 keeps the 49mm case every Ultra has used. Your bands don't have to make this decision with you.
